How to Access the Remote Access VPN on a laptop or desktop

Note: These instructions are for downloading and accessing the VPN on a laptop or desktop. To use the VPN client on a mobile device, visit How to Access the Remote Access VPN on a mobile device.

Installing the VPN

Go to the Remote Acccess VPN service overview page and click on the link for your operating system.

You will be prompted for your MyID and password.

The Cisco Secure Client installer will then download. Open the installer from where you downloaded the file.

Windows

Follow the installer instructions to finish the install.

Mac

When selecting what to install, ensure that AnyConnect VPN is checked. You can also choose to have Diagnostics and Reporting Tool checked for install. The remaining modules are not used and can unselected.

As you continue the installation, a pop-up will appear with additional instructions for settings changes to allow Cisco Secure Client to function. Please follow the instructions to enable the system extension.

Logging into the VPN

Once you have installed the VPN client, open Cisco Secure Client on your device.

Enter remote.uga.edu in the text box and click the Connect button.

Two windows will pop-up: one with the login screen, another with Group selection. Usually the login screen will appear over the Group selection window. Leave the Group dropdown as 01 Default unless specifically required to use 02 Restricted.

Enter your MyID@uga.edu email address for the username and click Next. You cannot use your email alias address.

Type your password into the box and click Log in.

You will be presented with a Duo authentication request, as you would on a regular UGA SSO login.

Complete the Duo authentication or click Other options if you wish to use a different authentication method than the one presented automatically.

Please note: Platform authenticators (Touch ID/Face ID, Android biometrics, Windows Hello) do not work with the pop-up login window as cookies cannot be accessed or saved, so they will not be presented as an available authentication option.

Once you have completed your chosen Duo authentication method, you will be connected to the VPN.

Connecting to 02 Restricted VPN

To connect to the 02 Restricted VPN instead of 01 Default, move the login window if it's covering the Group selection window. Click the Group dropdown and select 02 Restricted.

The old login window will close and a new one will open. Log in with your MyID@uga.edu email address for the username, your password, and Duo authentication, like you would for the 01 Default VPN as described above.
