How to Access the Remote Access VPN on a laptop or desktop

Instructions for downloading the Cisco VPN client and logging into the Remote Access VPN.

Note: These instructions are for downloading and accessing the VPN on a laptop or desktop. To use the VPN client on a mobile device, visit How to Access the Remote Access VPN on a mobile device.

Installing the VPN

Go to the Remote Acccess VPN service overview page and click on the link for your operating system.

You will be prompted for your MyID and password.

The Cisco Secure Client installer will then download. Open the installer from where you downloaded the file.

Windows

Follow the installer instructions to finish the install.

Mac

When selecting what to install, ensure that AnyConnect VPN is checked. You can also choose to have Diagnostics and Reporting Tool checked for install. The remaining modules are not used and can unselected.

As you continue the installation, a pop-up will appear with additional instructions for settings changes to allow Cisco Secure Client to function. Please follow the instructions to enable the system extension.

Logging into the VPN

Once you have installed the VPN client, open Cisco Secure Client on your device.

Enter remote.uga.edu in the text box and click the Connect button to go to the login screen.

On the login window, leave Group as 01 Default unless specifically required to use 02 Restricted from the drop down. Enter your MyID and password for Username and Password. In the Second Password field, enter your ArchPass Duo authentication method of choice. Select OK.

Using the Second Password field

If you type phone, you will receive a call to your Duo-enrolled phone after selecting the OK button. Answer the call on your phone and press 1 to approve the login. You will then be connected to the VPN.

If you type push, you will receive a push notification to your Duo-enrolled phone or tablet after selecting OK.  Select Approve on the notification from the app. You will then be connected to the VPN.

To use a passcode, open Duo Mobile and click Show to view the code. Enter that code or one from a text message into the Second Password box. Then select OK. You will then be connected to the VPN.

If you need another passcode by text message, type sms in the Second Password box and select OK. You will receive a new code. You will then need to re-enter your password on the VPN login and type the new code in the Second Password box. Then select OK to complete the login and be connected to the VPN.

If you are using a secondary Duo device, add the number 2 after the words phone, push, or sms to have the action apply to that device. Example: Enter phone2 to call the secondary device or push3 for a push notification to a tertiary device, etc.
