OpenAI Programs for Academic Researchers

OpenAI has made available several programs exclusively for trusted academic researchers. These programs operate outside of the UGA tenant, and must be activated independent of the licensed availability of ChatGPT.

Before you Register

  • UGA and EITS cannot provision access to these services as part of their centrally managed ChatGPT licensing. Faculty members and labs will need to register with OpenAI independently as an organization using the registration links below.
  • As these services operate outside the scope of UGA’s centrally managed ChatGPT licensing and its enhanced privacy protections, research and data shared through these programs may not be granted the same level of institutional protections available to centrally managed ChatGPT accounts. Any data or information uploaded to or produced by these services may be shared and used to train new and existing AI models.
  • While these services are currently available without fees, UGA can provide no guarantees that there may not be costs incurred now or in the future.
  • As this access is independently maintained by users and organizations in direct coordination with OpenAI, support for these services and platforms is not available from UGA and EITS.

ChatGPT for Academic Researchers

ChatGPT for Academic Researchers provides eligible faculty and postdoctoral researchers at participating academic institutions with 12 months of complimentary access to a dedicated ChatGPT workspace.

Each workspace supports up to five verified researchers and includes business-level data protections and ChatGPT Pro-level usage limits. The program is intended to support academic research across eligible fields, including science, engineering, mathematics, and computer science.

Eligibility includes institutional affiliation, verification through SheerID, and a qualifying recent research publication.

Life Sciences Trusted Access Program & GPT-Rosalind

OpenAI’s Life Sciences Trusted Access Program provides vetted organizations conducting legitimate biological and life sciences research with access to OpenAI models under additional eligibility, governance and safety requirements. The program is designed to support beneficial research in areas such as biomedical research, drug and therapeutic development, genomics, computational biology, and public health while reducing unnecessary restrictions for approved research activities.

Eligible organizations may also receive access to GPT-Rosalind, a specialized OpenAI model designed specifically for advanced life sciences research and drug discovery. It is built to support workflows such as scientific literature, synthesis, genomics, and protein analysis, hypothesis generation, experimental planning, and medicinal chemistry.

Daybreak - Trusted Access fo Cyber (TAC)

OpenAI Daybreak provides verified cybersecurity practitioners and organizations with access to advanced AI capabilities for authorized cybersecurity work. Daybreak is OpenAI’s current implementation of its Trusted Access for Cyber (TAC) program and includes two access levels: Daybreak Blue for defensive cybersecurity workflows and Daybreak Red for advanced, authorized security testing and research.

Applications are subject to verification, approval, and additional security controls.
