Exporting and Importing Saved ChatGPT Conversations

These instructions can be used to manually export saved chats from your existing ChatGPT account and import them into a new account.

Exporting a Chat Conversation

  1. Log into the exporting ChatGPT account and open the chat conversation you’d like to export.
  2. Highlight the contents of the conversation and copy.
  3. Paste the contents into a new document in Word or another text editor.
  4. Save the document with a name that references the topics covered in your chat conversation.

Importing a Chat Conversation

  1. Log into the importing ChatGPT account and start a new chat.
  2. Enter the following prompt:
    “I am about to upload a conversation. Can you please save it onto workspace memory?”
  3. After receiving confirmation, upload the document.
  4. Verify the response from ChatGPT. It should inform you that the document has been reviewed and the saved memory has been updated.

Creating a Canvas from a Word Document

Next, ChatGPT allows you to convert the Word Document you imported into a Canvas, a collaborative editing space where you and ChatGPT can work on a long-form document or code file side by side. You can learn more about the feature on the Open AI website.

  1. Continuing from the last step, enter the following prompt:
    “Can you place the document I just uploaded in a canvas so I can work on it over time?”
  2. Verify the response. It should be a summary of the document.

Creating a Canvas from a Word Document

Next, request that ChatGPT converts the Canvas into a persistent chat conversation. A persistent chat refers to a conversation that is saved and accessible to be added to over time. Information on how memory works in ChatGPT is available on the Open AI website.

  1. Continuing from the last step, enter the following prompt:
    “Can you generate a prompt to re-instantiate the latest Canvas? I want to use this as an ongoing chat thread.”
  2. Copy and paste the provided prompt into the chat.
  3. Verify that ChatGPT has created the persistent chat in the sidebar.
