Goals
  • Safety is enhanced when each individual department and unit within the University emphasizes a culture of security within their area of responsibility.
Why are these best practices?
  • Helps ensure the safety and security of our buildings and employees
  • Reduces costs by eliminating the need for changing locks
  • Allows certain areas of a building to be accessible to the public while securing other areas
  • Proteccts critical areas
  • Promotes employee honesty
Best Practices
  • Establish clear Policies and Procedures regarding overall access to buildings and areas within the building
  • Generate as few keys per unit as possible and restrict issuance of master or core keys to authorized individuals only. Authorization should be at an Associate Director or higher level.
  • Design system that secures keys and tracks who has access and to what they have access to.
