Azure Files: Features and Pricing

Azure Files is a managed cloud file storage service hosted in the University of Georgia’s Microsoft Azure environment and available through our cost recovery program. The service provides shared file storage using the standard SMB protocol and integrates with UGA identity and access controls.

Note: EITS plans to transition the backend hybrid cloud infrastructure supporting IFS and Research IFS to Azure Files for overall service and cost improvements in the future. Azure Files storage is available now for new customers. 

Who can use this service? 

Azure Files is available to UGA departments and units that require centrally managed shared file storage for departmental, application, or research data. Requests for service are reviewed by EITS to ensure appropriate configuration, security controls, and cost recovery alignment.

What does EITS provide? 

• Enterprise-managed Azure subscriptions and storage accounts 

• Integration with UGA Active Directory for authentication and authorization 

• Capacity management, monitoring, and cost recovery 

• Two tiers of storage performance:  

  • Hot for actively changing data  

  • Cool for typically unchanging data
