How to Manually Export and Import Saved Chats

Summary

These instructions can be used to manually export saved chats from your existing ChatGPT workspace and import them into a new workspace. These steps can be repeated for each chat that needs to be migrated from one workspace to another.

Body

These instructions can be used to manually export saved chats from your existing ChatGPT workspace and import them into a new workspace. These steps can be repeated for each chat that needs to be migrated from one workspace to another.

Copy and paste the entire chat from your existing workspace into a Word document. Save the document with a title that is the same or similar to the chat.

Note: the term ‘topic of conversation’ is used in this article to show where the title should be referenced.

Upload this Word document into your new workspace, and use the following prompt to tell ChatGPT what to do:

“I am about to upload a conversation. Can you please save it onto workspace memory?”

ChatGPT should provide a response, such as ““The conversation has been reviewed, and your memory has been updated with the full context of your ‘topic of conversation’.”

Create a Canvas from a Word Document

Next, you can create a canvas from the Word document. A canvas is a collaborative editing space where you and ChatGPT can work on a long-form document or code file side by side. You can learn more about this feature on Open AI’s website: What is the canvas feature in ChatGPT and how do I use it?

Use the following prompt to tell ChatGPT what to do: “Can you place the document I just uploaded in a canvas so I can work on it over time?”

The response will be a summary of the Word document.

Create a Persistent Chat

Next, request a specific prompt from ChatGPT to create a persistent chat in the Chats sidebar. A persistent chat in ChatGPT refers to a conversation that is saved and remains accessible over time, allowing you to return to it later and continue where you left off. You can learn more about this feature on Open AI’s website: Memory for ChatGPT Team - FAQ.

Use the following prompt to tell ChatGPT what to do: “Can you generate a prompt to re-instantiate the latest canvas? I want to use this as an ongoing chat thread.”

ChatGPT should provide a response, such as, “I want to start a persistent chat thread to manage our ‘topic of conversation’ project. Please load the ‘topic of conversation’ document and treat this as our ongoing workspace for ‘various salient goals of ‘topic of conversation’’.”

Use the generated prompt, which will create a persistent chat in the Chats sidebar.

Once new chat is created and validated, delete the chat in the old workspace if desired. If not, the chat in the old workspace will remain as-is.
