Body
This information is provided for UGA employees participating in the Provost’s ChatGPT for Education Trial, initiated in Summer 2025.
If you already have a ChatGPT subscription or a paid OpenAI account linked to your @uga.edu email address, please take these additional steps to prepare for your UGA ChatGPT Edu account.
Before you begin
If there are any chats from your existing account you want to keep, save them elsewhere. Some account types support merging, but others do not. Saving the chats elsewhere will ensure they are not lost in the new account creation process.
Recommended methods:
- Copy and paste key threads into a separate document and save them individually. When your account is set up, you can upload these documents into your ChatGPT Edu account and ask ChatGPT to remember them. Instructions for how to manual export and import chats, create a canvas, and create a persistent chat are available here.
- Your account type may have access to the Export Data feature.
NOTE: Custom GPTs will not be transferred as part of the migration process. If you have created any Custom GPTs, please document and export all relevant data before transitioning. If needed, manually transfer your saved chats as individual documents over to your ChatGPT Edu account and ask ChatGPT to remember them.
How to join the UGA ChatGPT Edu workspace (existing @uga.edu accounts)
Make sure you are logged out of any other ChatGPT accounts.
Click Join Workspace in your ChatGPT Edu welcome email. A screen will appear with a green message banner at the top. Under Get Started, click Log In (not “Sign Up”).

Select your login method: Email address, Continue with Google, Continue with Apple or Continue with phone. You must select the same login method you originally used when you signed up with your @uga.edu email. Do not select Continue with Microsoft Account. This method won’t work with UGA Accounts.

You may be prompted to decide how you want to transition your existing ChatGPT workspace.
You will have two options:
-
Transfer existing chat history and GPTs. This option will merge your existing chat history and settings into the new university-provided workspace.
-
Export and delete your existing chat history. This option will remove your current workspace but allow you to more easily create a new personal account if applicable. Do not select this option if you have Custom GPTs; they will not be transferred as part of the migration process.
Then click Continue.

You have now been added to the workspace and can begin using ChatGPT Edu.
