Body
There are three types of Microsoft Groups: a Distribution Group, a Microsoft 365 Group and a Microsoft Team. Each type of group has a different purpose, and different permissions and benefits. When requesting a Group, please ensure you are selecting the right type of group for your purpose.
Distribution Groups
A Distribution Group allows the Group owner to send emails to the Group members. A Distribution Group is useful for users who want to send a one-way email to members of the group. It is the most limited kind of Microsoft Group out of the three Microsoft Groups.
Please include the following information when requesting a Distribution Group:
- Group Name: Be descriptive and unique.
- Department/Student Organization: This will be added to the name and used as an identifier to tie it back to the appropriate department/organization.
- Group Owner's MyID: Additional owners can be assigned by this individual after creation.
- Description: This field is optional but may be useful.
You can request a Distribution Group through our UGAMail request form.
Microsoft 365 Groups
A Microsoft 365 Group allows members to collaborate with Microsoft 365 Products. Members can schedule meetings, create and share documents, and send emails. One of the main benefits of a Microsoft Group is that members are allowed access to shared documents.
Please include the following information when requesting a Microsoft 365 Group:
- Group Name: Be descriptive and unique.
- Department/Student Organization: This will be added to the name and used as an identifier to tie it back to the appropriate department/organization.

Microsoft Teams
A Microsoft Team is a virtual office group where owners and members can collaborate in real time. With a Microsoft Team, you gain all the benefits of a Microsoft 365 Group as well as the Microsoft Teams application. Within the Microsoft Teams application, members can send chat messages, host meetings, access a shared calendar, and access a place to share and store files up to 5 TB.
Please Include the following information when requesting a Microsoft Team:
- Group Name: Be descriptive and unique.
- Department/Student Organization: This will be added to the name and used as an identifier to tie it back to the appropriate department/organization.
