How to Strengthen the Security of Your List

Summary

Changing the Send permissions can strengthen the security of your list. This article shows you how to change send permissions.

Body

UGA Listserv lists that are configured with Send=Public give sending permissions to anyone who wants to post to the list. Lists with these settings can receive unwanted emails from non-subscribers, including emails that may be phishing scams.

For security, EITS recommends limiting who can send to your lists by reconfiguring the Send= permission.

There are several different levels of Send permissions:

  • Set list to Send= Private. This allows only the list owner and the list subscribers to post to the list.
  • Set list to Send= Public,Confirm,Non-MemberThis setting requires non-subscribers actively confirm their messages to the list, while allowing subscribers to post without confirmation. This setting can dramatically cut down on spam for lists that accept postings from non-subscribers.

How to reconfigure the Send permission for your list

Log in to UGA Listserv via https://listserv.uga.edu/

Select the drop-down menu on the left-hand side of the window.

Go to your list.

Select List Configuration from the side menu.

Select My Configuration.

Select Edit with Wizard.

Click on the blue Send= keyword under the List Header.

On the Keyword page, you can reconfigure the Send permissions for your list.

  •    If you want to set your list to Private, click on Send= dropdown menu and select Private.
  •    If you want keep your list as Send= Public, please select the checkboxes for Confirm and Only Non-Members confirm.

Once you have made your changes, click the Update button on the right side of the page to update your list's configuration. You should see a notification at the top of the page above the Keyword box notifying you that the configuration have been saved.

When non-subscribers send to your list, they will receive a confirmation message with a link in it to confirm that they sent the message.

If they click on the link, they should get a confirmation, and the email will be delivered to the list subscribers.

More information is available in this L-Soft video on configuring your listserv discussion group and Send permissions options.
