What is the individual file limit for OneDrive for Business?

Each individual file uploaded to or downloaded from OneDrive for Business cannot exceed 250 GB. Files within a zip file cannot exceed 20 GB. More information is available on Microsoft's website under Restrictions and limitations in OneDrive and SharePoint

What is the maximum number of files that can be stored in OneDrive for Business? 

For optimum performance, Microsoft recommends storing no more than 300,000 items in OneDrive for Business. This includes files and folders. More information is available on Microsoft's website under Restrictions and limitations in OneDrive and SharePoint

What is the storage limit for OneDrive for Business? 

Microsoft has announced new storage limits for its academic customers, and as a result, UGA students, faculty and staff will see changes to the available storage limits in their OneDrive for Business accounts. Effective August 1, 2024, OneDrive for Business storage for faculty, staff and students accounts will be capped at 1 TB. For more information, visit the EITS stories page.

Students, faculty and staff are provisioned with 1 TB (terabytes) of storage in OneDrive for Business.

The maximum amount of storage allowed for these OneDrive for Business accounts is 1TB. A Microsoft Teams account or a SharePoint Team site has 5 TB.

Departmental, affiliate and retiree accounts are provisioned with 100 GB of storage in OneDrive for Business. 

What are the restrictions on file types and file names in OneDrive for Business?

You cannot upload OneNote files, or files with a *.tmp or *.ds_store extension. Additionally, you cannot upload desktop.ini, thumbs.db, or ehthumbs.db.

These names are not allowed for files or folders: lock, CONPRNAUXNULCOM0 - COM9LPT0 - LPT9_vti_desktop.ini, any filename starting with ~$.

Other restrictions:

  • "_vti_" cannot appear anywhere in a file name.
  • "forms" is not supported when the folder is at the root level for a library.
  • You cannot create a folder name in SharePoint that begins with a tilde (~).
  • The following characters are not allowed in file and folder names: ~ " # % & * : < > ? / \ { | }.
  • Leading and trailing spaces in file or folder names also are not allowed.

File names can have up to 128 characters.

Folder names can have up to 256 characters.

Folder name/file name combinations can have up to 260 characters
