Warnell Computer Workstation Security Recommendations

Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources Computer Workstation Security Recommendations

It has always been the goal of Warnell IT to keep our workstations and the UGA network safe from all types of security risks! To assist us with securing our data and network, please take the following steps to better secure your workstations:

  1. If not already done, have Trend Micro Anti-virus software installed on your UGA-owned workstations and laptop computers.  Microsoft Windows Defender, the default anti-virus program for most workstations and laptop computers, has proven to be ineffective in providing the most adequate security protection.  Make an appointment with Warnell IT for a date and time to visit your office to install Trend Micro on your workstation(s)
  2. Activate a screen lock whenever you step away from your workstation to prevent unwanted access
  3. Apply Windows automatic updates for daily or weekly downloads and installations.
  4. Do not leave passwords written on pieces of paper (i.e., Post-it Notes) on your desk, under a keyboard, in a drawer, etc. where someone else can easily acquire them
  5. Avoid using the same password for multiple accounts.  An intruder will easily be able to access other accounts if he/she guesses that the same password is being used for multiple accounts!
  6. Consider using an encrypted flash drive with passwords or a password manager, such as 1Password or LastPass
  7. Please send all computers and printers (if they print using ethernet) to Warnell IT BEFORE sending to surplus
