UGA Web Account Request

Enterprise Information Technology Services (EITS) offers resources and services to all University-affiliated units, with a unit generally described as a college, school, office, center, institute, department, student organization, staff organization, or faculty organization.

Departments and organizations developing WWW pages on EITS-provided facilities are expected to maintain the currency of their page content and conform to the University of Georgia computer usage policies and follow Guidelines for the handling of sensitive data. Sensitive data should not be hosted on this platform, as it is public by nature. Storing Social Security Numbers on UGA Webhosting servers is strictly prohibited and will result in a disruption or termination of service.

Terms of service may change at any time without notice.

Unit Administrator and Unit Administrator Expertise

Each department/organization is required to have a designated Unit Administrator. The Unit Administrator is responsible for the inclusion of information within unit's WWW space and the continued maintenance of the unit's WWW space.

It is preferred that the Unit Administrator be a faculty or staff member within the UGA unit. If the Unit Administrator is a student, or faculty/staff member from a different unit, sponsorship of a faculty/staff member from within the unit is required and information about the sponsor must be provided as part of the request (below).

Desired expertise of the Unit Administrator includes:

  1. Familiarity with a WWW browser.
  2. Basic knowledge of HTML, the HyperText Markup Language.
  3. Access to, and ability to use, basic networking tools for (1) connecting to the UGA WWW server (ssh) and (2) transferring files between your local computer and the UGA WWW server (ftp).
  4. Ability to manage and maintain a group of related files within the assigned space for the unit.

Each requesting unit will be provided one login account.

Nature of WWW Space

  1. Each requesting unit will be allocated a space. This space may be used by the unit for, and only for, the distribution of information via WWW.
  2. In order to protect all clients on the system, the execution of server-side scripts and programs will not be allowed except within certain pre-specified directories. However, to mitigate the impact of this policy, EITS does provide support for the following:
    1. Forms processing. Forms creation is the responsibility of the Unit Administrator. Forms results can be emailed to a specified address. The UGA WWW server does not currently provide secure "over the wire" transmission of form information; therefore, soliciting or storing sensitive information via a form is not allowed.
    2. Access authentication. Access to areas of your WWW space can be restricted to domains ( or individuals (via a user/password validation file). The creation, maintenance, and integrity of the restricted areas and associated access files are the responsibility of the Unit Administrator. In addition, the Unit Administrator is responsible for determining if the access authentication method provides sufficient access authentication and/or restriction.
    3. Account-specific cgi-bin directories. Under special circumstances, a specific directory can be granted CGI privileges for a unit account.
  3. The Unit Administrator is responsible for keeping up-to-date backups of all unit-related WWW information. Incremental backups will be performed on the UGA WWW server; however, the Unit Administrator should not rely solely upon these incremental backups.
  4. Accounts which have never been used for six months from the time they are initially set up are subject to deletion.
  5. All passwords must be a combination of upper and lower case letters, digits, and other characters (each of these character types are referred to as classes). You can use an 8 character long password with characters from at least 3 of these 4 classes, or a 7 character long password containing characters from all the classes. An upper case letter that begins the password and a digit that ends it do not count towards the number of character classes used. All Unit Administrators will be required to change the account password every 180 days.
